Continual Miracle: An Afternoon by the Sea in Atlit

“To me, the sea is a continual miracle.” — Walt Whitman

We arrived at Atlit Beach, Israel, with family and settled down by the shore. The gentle Mediterranean breeze was refreshing. We took off our shoes and stepped into the water. Sunlight mixed with the foam of the waves, creating fascinating patterns of lines and squares that shifted with every wave. Tiny fish darted between the rocks, while algae and shells clung to the stones beneath the surface.

Walking barefoot on the soft sand, I observed the natural textures of the beach: the sand, rocks, and little fish, and the rhythmic motion of the waves. Nearby, fishermen stood quietly with their rods, blending into the tranquil coastal scene. There’s something special about the energy of Atlit Beach, part of a marine nature reserve, that lets you forget everything and simply be in the moment.

We shared a good meal, enjoying the view, the fresh air, and the soothing sound of the waves. Then I noticed a hooded crow perched on a post, just before it spread its wings and took flight.

“Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?” — David Attenborough

Atlit Beach has an exotic, almost wild atmosphere, and it is often surprisingly quiet, with few swimmers around. Several striking elements give this beach its picturesque character: a long pier stretching into the sea, serving as a ramp for fishermen, and the remains of an ancient fortress nearby. The surrounding area, including the salt pools of Atlit, attracts birdwatchers who come to observe waterbirds and shorebirds throughout the year. Even along the shoreline, it’s possible to see a variety of coastal and migratory birds, making Atlit Beach a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.

These quiet moments at Atlit Beach made me feel deeply connected — to the Mediterranean Sea, to nature, and to the gentle silence that only such pristine places can offer. Whether you are capturing photos of the waves, observing hooded crows, or simply walking along the sand, the peaceful coastal environment of Atlit is a continual miracle in every sense.
